Carhaix-Plouguer

Carhaix- Plouguer ( Breton Karaez - Plouger ) is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany in 7541 with a population (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

The place is centrally located in the west of Brittany. Quimper is located 50 kilometers south-west, the major city and port of Brest and 68 kilometers north-west Paris, 450 kilometers east (in straight line ). The northern municipal boundary formed by the River Hyère.

History

Carhaix goes back to the Roman Vorgium, which is also known from excavations. It was the provincial capital of Osismier. The settlement had a Gallic predecessor settlement comes in the first remains of the 4th century. A major attraction of the village is the Romanesque church of Saint- Pierre de Plouguer, the oldest phases of the 11th century come. The Church of the Holy Tremeur was founded in the 14th century, the present building dates largely from the 19th century.

The church today was created in 1956 from the merger of the previously independent municipalities and Carhaix Plouguer.

Infrastructure

Carhaix- Plouguer lies at the intersection of several national roads. In Landivisiau, Morlaix and Guingamp in the north there are runs on the highway E 50 Brest- Rennes and Quimper and Lorient, in the south of the E 60 Brest- Nantes. Here are also stations on the mostly parallel regional rail lines. The train station of Brest is the end of TGV Atlantique to Paris.

Carhaix- Plouguer was originally the center of a vast network of narrow gauge railways which have now all shut down and dismantled. The airports Aéroport de Brest Brittany, near Brest and Lorient Bretagne Sud Aéroport de Lorient at the next regional airports.

Culture

Since 1991, Carhaix annually in July venue for the multi-day festival des Vieilles Charrues, considered in relation to the number of viewers (240,000 in 2011 ) as the largest music festival in France.

In 1999, the first and only school of Diwan- Relecq -Kerhuon ( Brest ) was moved to Carhaix- Plouguer.
