Carl Ludwig Willdenow

Carl Ludwig (from) Willdenow ( born August 22, 1765 in Berlin, † July 10, 1812 ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Willd. ".

Life

After a pharmacist in teaching Langensalza 1785, he studied at the University of Halle medicine and botany and became in 1789 a doctorate to the Dr. med. He then worked as a pharmacist in Berlin. In 1789 he became professor of natural history at the Collegium Medico - chirurgicum, 1801 Member of the Academy of Sciences and of public teachers of botany at the newly founded University of Berlin. In 1810 he became director of the botanical garden in Berlin. From 1811 he worked in Paris, where he finds the plants, the Alexander von Humboldt had brought from South America, sifted, certain and systematically filed.

From Paris, he returned to Berlin because of illness, and died there soon. Willdenow was one of the most important taxonomists of his time and one of the founders of Dendrology.

Honors

He was the genus Willdenowia Thunb honor. the plant family of Restionaceae named. Also appearing since 1953 Willdenowia magazine is named after him.

The Botanical Garden Berlin awards the prize Willdenow Medal.

In Berlin, two streets are named after him, in the immediate vicinity of the Botanical Garden Willdenowstraße in Berlin light field and in Berlin-Wedding, the Willdenowstraße near the subway station Wedding.
