Carlo Maria Viganò

Carlo Maria Viganò ( born January 16, 1941 in Varese, Italy) is a diplomat of the Holy See.

Life

Carlo Maria Viganò received on 24 March 1968, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He was incardinated in the Diocese of Pavia. Viganò was his Doctor of Laws.

Carlo Maria Viganò 1973 entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Iraq and in the UK and from 1978 to 1989 in the Vatican Secretariat of State. Viganò was appointed on 4 April 1989 Permanent Observer at the Euro Europe in Strasbourg.

On April 3, 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Ulpiana and appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria. Pope John Paul II gave him on 26 April 1992, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Angelo Sodano and Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Franciszek Macharski. On 4 April 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed delegate in the Vatican Secretariat of State. On 16 July 2009 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. in succession by Renato Boccardo Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City.

On 19 October 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. him Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. This followed the publication geleakter letters (for example, a March 27, 2011), in which Viganò indicating its efforts to combat corruption and cronyism and the desire expressed to continue his ministry.
