Carlos Martínez de Irujo, Duke of Sotomayor

Carlos Fernando Martínez de Irujo y McKean Tacón y Armitage, Marquis ( Marquis ) of Casa - Irujo, Duke ( Duque ) Sotomayor ( born December 14, 1802 in Washington, DC, † December 26, 1855 in Madrid) was a Spanish diplomat, politician and Prime Minister of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ).

Biography

The son of the future three-time State Minister Carlos Martínez de Irujo y Tacón was born during the occupation of his father as an envoy in Washington. His mother, Sally McKean, was the daughter of Thomas McKean, one of the founding fathers of the United States.

He began his political career on September 22, 1837 as he ( Diputatados Congreso de los ) was elected as a member of the Partido Moderado for Members of Parliament, where he first represented the interests of the constituencies of Málaga and then from Palencia to February 1841. On September 15, 1843, he was re-elected as members of parliament and was then up to the December 1846 representatives of the constituencies of Córdoba and Madrid.

Between 1843 and 1848 he was next to Second President of the Casino ( Casino de Madrid). On August 15, 1845, he was then a senator for life ( Senador Vitalicio ) appointed.

On January 28, 1847 his appointment came as Prime Minister of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ), replacing Francesco Xavier de Isturiz. During his tenure, he took next to the office of Minister for Foreign Affairs ( Ministro de Estado ) and was particularly eager to provide balance between the different political forces. However, his government was overthrown by the lover of Queen Isabella II, General Francisco Serrano Domínguez, already on 28 March 1847.

On 23 October 1847 he was appointed foreign minister in the cabinet of Ramón María Narváez third, where he remained until July 29, 1848. Most recently, he was appointed in 1850 as ambassador to Paris. However, he lost this office already on January 4, 1851 according to the office of Prime Minister Juan Bravo Murillo.

For his political achievements, he was honored several times and received the following awards, among others:

  • Grand Cross of the Tower and Sword Order ( Ordem Militar da Torre e Espada ) ( Portugal)
