Carnelian (grape)

Carnelian is a red grape variety. It is a new breed between ( x Carignan Cabernet Sauvignon) and Grenache. The crossing was made in 1949 by Harold Olmo at the University of California at Davis. The launch of the grape was in 1974.

The parent variety ( Cabernet Sauvignon Carignan x ) named F2 -7 was already in 1936. Breeding goal is to create a variety specifically for the dry and hot conditions of the Central Valley region in California was. The very high-yielding variety is mostly used for blends and also cultivated in Texas and Hawaii. The species looks similar to very strongly the Grenache, but is qualitatively not come close to this.

Currently there are approximately 893 acres ( 361.4 hectares) planted with the variety Carnelian in California (→ Viticulture in California). Since the variety is hardly replanted, remove the stocks.

With the same parents, the less successful Centurian variety was bred in 1949.
