Harold Olmo

Harold Olmo (* July 31, 1909, † 30 June 2006) was an American plant physiologist, botanist and oenologist Rebzüchter. He was a professor of the Department of Viticulture and Enology, University of California at Davis.

In 1931 he was appointed by the former Institute director AJ Winkler set with the task of new variety of grape varieties. Until his retirement in 1979, he submitted several thousand new varieties, of which 31 varieties were included in the national lists of varieties and had some commercial success. His best-known varieties are the varieties Ruby Cabernet, Rubired, Royalty, Emerald Riesling, Symphony, flora, Carmine, Carnelian and Centurian. In the table grape varieties Perlette, Ruby Seedless, Red Globe Early Muscat and enjoy a certain reputation.

About his work as Rebzüchter addition Olmo has influenced the California wine growing significantly. Through clonal selection and application of a quarantine station in Davis, he could greatly increase the health and the quality of major grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling and adapt to the local conditions. The rise of American viticulture in the international market is based mainly on the transition of the winemakers in this international varieties.
