Caspar Commelijn

Caspar Commelin (* 1668 in Amsterdam, † 1731 ibid.; Caspar Commelijn ) was a Dutch botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " C.Commelijn ".

Life

Caspar Commelin was the son of his father's eponymous Commelin Caspar (1634-1693) and his first wife Margrieta Heydanus ( 1639-1669 ). He was a nephew of Jan Commelin.

On September 12, 1692, he enrolled at the University of Leiden as a medical student, and ended on February 27, 1694 there graduated with the De lumbricis. After graduating, he returned to his native city of Amsterdam. Peter Hotton mediated Frederik Ruysch him who hired him in 1696 as a botanist at the Hortus Medicus of Amsterdam. His first botanical work was published in the same year as Flora Malabarica; it is a plant register, which opens up the 12 -volume Hortus Indicus Malabaricus by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede dead Draakenstein.

March 19, 1699, he married Johanna bird, but already died in 1704 and his son Caspar ( 1700-1734 ) left, who worked as a doctor.

In 1701 he completed the second part of this work Horti medici Amstelodamensis plantarum, which had begun his uncle Jan Commelin. Since that year he was next Ruysch in teaching as a lecturer for the exotic plants operate ( two of his lectures were published in 1703 ). He also carried out the provisions of Maria Sibylla Merian plants Suriname book Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium.

On July 17, 1705 he married his second wife, Maria van den Bosch. It was in 1706 titular professor of botany at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam. Since 1711 he was inspector of the Collegium Medicum and thus partly responsible for the reform of the Pharmacopoeia in Amsterdam in 1726.

Caspar Commelin was in Germany since 1704 Member of the Academia Naturae Curiosorum.

Ehrentaxon

Charles Plumier named the Commelins in honor of the genus Commelina the plant family of Commelina family ( Commelinaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
