Catterick, formerly written Catherick, is a village and a parish in the Civil District Richmondshire of North Yorkshire. In order to distinguish the location of the nearby Catterick Garrison, it is often called Catterick Village.

History

At the time of Roman rule in England the place was called Cataractonium and was a fortress which should protect the crossroads of the Great North Road and Dere Street ( Via regia) on the River Swale. In the Geographike Hyphegesis of Ptolemy 150 BC Κατουρακτονιον is called as a landmark. The name is derived from the Celtic word for " hills of a battle ."

Here the battle of Catraeth to have taken place ( by 598 BC), a battle between the Celtic kingdoms of the "Old North" ( Hen Ogledd ) and the Anglo- Saxon kingdom of Bernicia. In the epic poem Y Gododdin this battle is sung. In nearby River Swale St Paulinus of York has completed its first baptism rituals to the Gentiles.

Later the place as a coaching inn on the Great North Road was important because it offered Nächtigungsmöglichkeiten and change horses. The still existing inn Angel Inn was such a rest stop. The Saint Anne 's Church has a Norman roof construction, the remains of the medieval Motte Erdwalles Killerby Castle can be visited nearby.

Catterick Garrison and RAF Catterick

Catterick Garrison is approximately 12,000 soldiers the largest garrison world the British Army. A large part of the inhabitants of Catterick Village is employed here. The garrison includes several military camp ( barracks ), civil building, a supermarket and a McDonalds. The founder of Scouting, Lord Robert Baden -Powell, recommended in 1908 as commander of the Northern Territorial Army garrison to Catterick - at that time the garrison Richmond Camp was still in Richmond Castle, until 1915 it was renamed after laying in Catterick Camp. Today, here are the 4th Mechanized Brigade ( with the 1st Battalion Scots Guards ) and the Infantry Training Centre ( ITC) Catterick ( with the 3rd Battalion Gurkha Company) stationed.

The airfield RAF Catterick RAF, built in 1914, was until 1994 site for different application and training sessions. Then he became the Army passed and has since become a part of Catterick Garrison.
