Central Sulawesi

Sulawesi Tengah ( German Central Sulawesi, formerly Central Celebes ) is an Indonesian province on the island of Sulawesi. It is located on the equator in the northern part of the island, covering the southern part of the northern peninsula and the eastern peninsula. Central Sulawesi is divided into ten administrative districts ( kabupaten, Eng. Regency ) divided.

Because of their isolation, the province is one of the most economically backward from all over Indonesia. The only major industry, the timber industry. In the mountainous region south of the capital Palu, the Lore Lindu National Park, an important refuge of the endemic flora and fauna of Wallacea 'hotspots' of biodiversity is located. In recent years, the cultivation of cocoa has been spreading.

Islam reached the region in the 17th century, the Dutch colonial rule became established in the 18th century. Thus began the Protestant missionary work among the population that led to today little more than a quarter of the population are Protestants, one of the highest in the whole of Indonesia. During World War II it was occupied Japanese, after the independence of Indonesia (1949 ), the region belonged to the province of North Sulawesi. The modern province was formed in 1964.

Administrative divisions

Zetnral Sulawesi is divided into 12 administrative districts ( kabupaten ) and one city ( kota ). It also covers 147 subunits Kecamatan and 1,664 villages ( Desa / Kelurahan ).
