Cerentino

Parish Church of Santa Maria

Cerentino is a municipality in the district Rovana, in the district of Valle Maggia the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

The village is located on the merger of the Val di Bosco and the Valle di Campo, 25 km north-west of Locarno. The eastern boundary of the municipality leads (mostly along streams ) from the Madone di Camedo ( 2'446 m asl) on the Pizzo Sascola ( 2,057 m asl) to Pizzo Mezzodi ( 2,223 m asl) in a southerly direction. From there it leads after a short swivel westward in a northwesterly direction to the Pizzo Bombögn ( 2'289 m asl). The northern boundary ( the municipality of Bosco / Gurin ) then runs east to Pian Crosc ( 1,955 m asl), there turns north over to Camino ( 2'489 m asl). The rest of the municipal boundary runs along burrs. First, northeast to Pizzo d' Orsalietta ( 2,476 m asl), then south-east back over the Pizzo della Rossa ( 2,482 m asl) and the Madonino ( 2'483 m asl ) for Madone di Campo. Main rivers are the Rovana and Bosco, the south of the hamlet Collinasca ( 761 m asl, 500 m east of Cerentino ) flow together. All eleven major settlements are located north of Rovana. However, not all of them inhabited. Besides the above mentioned, these are Collinasca Cerentino (980 m asl), Camanoi ( 1,136 m above sea level, 1 km north of Cerentino ), Corino ( 1,093 m above sea level, west of Camanoi ), Casa dei Giuen ( 1,080 m asl), Corsopra ( 1,140 m above sea level, both northwest of Cerentino ) and Piede delle Piode (954 m above sea level, 1 km southwest of Cerentino ). Of the total area of ​​2016 ha municipality 66.2 % of woods and forests and 27.6 % are non-productive area (mostly mountains) covered. Besides remain still merely 4.3% agricultural livestock (mostly Alps ) and 1.8 % settlement area.

Population

For centuries, people migrated from Cerentino. First, in other European countries (especially Italy and Holland), from the 19th century to California. The decline continued until 1990. Since then, strong population growth can be discerned (1990-2004: 46.8 %). However, the number of residents reached only 10 % of the original portfolio.

Languages

The population speaks as everyday language, a local dialect of Italian. From the immigration of some Foreign population is linguistically more uniform ( 1970, 98.67 % Italian speaking ). At the last census in 2000 gave 89.66 % Italian, German 8.62%, and 1.72% French as their primary language.

Religions - faiths

Economy

Previously, the inhabitants lived by the livestock. Early on there was an emigration to Italy and other European countries. In the 19th century, many inhabitants emigrated to California. 15 ( = 75 %) of the 20 workers of Cerentino work in their own community. The few Wegpendlern face seven commuters. Only a few locals earn their living in agriculture. The majority are working in the industrial and service workers.

Traffic

The community is involved through the two postal routes Cevio-Cerentino-Bosco/Gurin and Cevio - Cerentino - Cimalmotto into the network of public transport. Since these buses not very frequent, most residents use their private car as a means of transport.
