Cevio

Cevio is a municipality in the district Rovana, in the district of Valle Maggia and its main town in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

Cevio located 23 km north- west of Locarno in the upper area of the Maggia Valley. The majority ( 64.6 %) of the municipality of brain area of almost 15 km ² is covered by forest and woodland. About a quarter ( exactly 25.1%) are unproductive areas (mostly mountain land ), 5.2% and 5.1% of agricultural land settlement area. The place consists of the village Cevio itself and some hamlets and isolated houses standing groups.

History

On October 22, 2006 Cevio has merged with Cavergno and Cevio Bignasco to the community. The already by January 23, 2005 proposed merger had to be postponed because a lawsuit in federal court was still pending. In April 2006, the Board of the municipality Bignasco was dismissed against the forced merger by the Federal Court.

Population

Between 1591 and 1801, the population significantly reduced by emigration in the Valtellina. By 1850, they then grew sharply, mainly because of the function of the church as the main center of the valley. By 1888, the population was indeed back, but lower than in other communities of the Maggia Valley. Towards the end of the 19th Century began the great wave of emigration to the centers of Ticino and to Overseas (California, Australia ) is a ( 1888 to 1920: -36.2 %). In the 1940s and 1960s there was again a population growth ( 1941 to 1970: 60.6 %), which between 1970 and 1990 another large wave of emigration ( 1970 to 1990: -26.5 %) followed in other regions of Ticino. Strong growth in the 1990s (1990-2000: 20.3 %) was followed by a population decline of small-scale in recent years (2000-2004: -4.2 %).

Languages

In Cevio we speak an Italian dialect that is very different from standard Italian. At the last census in 2000, only 77.87 % reported ( 1970 95.73 %) of Italian as their main language. Other 10.87% (1970 1.42 %) spoke German, 4.23% ( 1970 2.31% ) Spanish. Cevio Ticino is one of those communities where the Italian has significantly lost ground.

Religions - faiths

In earlier times the entire population of the Roman Catholic Church was a member. By leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad, this has changed. Today ( as of 2000) are 78.27 % Roman Catholic, Evangelical Protestant, and 7.66% 1.61% Orthodox Christians. In addition, one finds 5.63% and 1.81 % non-religious Muslims. 4.62% of the population did not provide information about their creed. The Muslims are Bosnian and Albanian origin.

Origin - Nationality

Of the 476 residents are 364 ( = 76.47 %), Swiss citizen. At the last census was 76.86 % Swiss nationals, including 24 dual citizen. The largest immigrant groups come from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Bosnia - Herzegovina and Sri Lanka. The atypical for the region high proportion of immigrants is due to the large number of jobs in industry ( quarries ) and health care (hospital ).

The council consists of 25 people. President of the Municipal Council for the term 2008-2012 is Bruno Donati, his deputy is Nadia Poncetta Ceresa.

Economy

Cevio is one of the few places in the Maggia Valley with a minority of commuters. 120 persons in employment ( = 57.4 %) work in their own community. Of the 89 Wegpendlern the majority earned outside the Maggia their money - especially in Locarno, Losone, Bellinzona and Minusio. Cevio could easily offer all jobseekers the community a purchase, because the 89 Wegpendlern are faced with not less than 235 commuters. Thus, of the 355 workers in Cevio only a quarter ( 25.1%) locals. The quarries, the district hospital and the public administration offer many people a job. Agriculture ( farming, viticulture and animal husbandry ) is barely significant. In the 19th century, many inhabitants emigrated to Australia and California.

Traffic

The community was 1907-1965 at the line of Maggia Valley Railway. Since the conversion to bus it is by the line 315 of the FART, Locarno - Cavergno connected to the network of public transport.
