After the Franco-German War Luxembourg owned since 1871, only about a 10 km border with France. All rail transport had to be out of the Belgian Athus or the German Metz either. Only in 1886 a direct link from Rodingen was created in the French Longwy, but there was still no direct link with the city of Luxembourg. In addition to the previously required going through ash or Kleinbettingen were the different operating conditions - a part of the way was by Anonymous Luxembourg Prince Heinrich Railway and Erzgrubengesellschaft (PH ), the other to cover the Wilhelm- Luxembourg Society ( WL) - a problem.

While planning the Prince Heinrich railroad in the 1870s, a combination of Petingen to Luxembourg, however this should touch many villages and would have shortened the way only insignificantly. According to the financial difficulties of this company in the second half of the 1870s, the already partially licensed direct connection has not been built. A 1881 apply narrow-gauge railway from the government entirely rejected, Luxembourg would only allow a standard gauge railway. But on a direct connection normalspurigen the PH was not interested, because as the transport of the German Empire is much shorter than its railway Petingen - Ettelbrück ( Attertstrecke ) would be.

Only when the WL a concession in 1891 a direct connection planned, the PH again showed interest. While thus lost the Attertstrecke the highly profitable transit traffic, but remained so at least some of the traffic in the PH.

There were still outstanding diverse remaining work, the freight could be taken until 1901.

The newly built track pretty quickly gained international importance, the direct connections Luxembourg - Paris was passed over this. Also, the local passenger outperformed predictive animal adorns the planning.

For decades, the track was an important section of the Luxembourg railway network, was launched until the international goods and people across the electrified compound Esch- Bettemburg - Luxembourg, the importance declined in the 1960s.

1980/81, the line was electrified. Since November 2012, the route is two-pronged. The schedule could be improved by this expansion, also the top speed was increased to 140 km / h. Since then, the distance of a CBI is remotely controlled in Pétange.
