Chano Domínguez

Chano Domínguez ( born March 29, 1960 in Cadiz; actually Sebastián Domínguez Lozano ) is a Spanish jazz pianist. He was among the founders of flamenco jazz.

Life and work

Domínguez, whose father was a flamenco lovers, learned from the age of eight self-taught the game of flamenco guitar, and later the organ and the piano; he also sang in the church choir. In 1978, he founded the band CAI, with whom he was Andaluz one of the leading representatives of the rock. After the dissolution of the band in 1981 he devoted himself to play the piano and jazz music; he took part in festivals and undertook with the trio Hiscádix (whose musicians all came from Cádiz ) toured Germany and Belgium. In 1992 he founded his own trio, which combined the rhythm of flamenco with the musical forms of jazz in his music.

Domínguez worked, inter alia, Enrique Morente with, Estrella Morente, Michel Camilo, Martyrdom, Marta Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ana Belén, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Pepe de Lucía and Morenito de Illora. At the Festival Jazz Baltica 2005 he appeared with Jack DeJohnette, Blas Córdoba, Jerome Harris and Luisito Quintero. He was involved in several projects of the WDR Big Band Cologne (most recently 2011).

Prizes and awards

In 1992, he won the Spanish jazz competition as a junior talent. The end of 2012 his album was nominated lamenco Sketches ( Blue Note Records) for the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album category.
