Charaña Municipality

The municipality Charaña is a district in the department of La Paz in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Charaña is one of eight Municipalities of the province Pacajes and is located in the southwestern part of the province. It is bordered on the northwest by the province José Manuel Pando, on the west by the Republic of Chile, to the southeast and east by the municipality of Calacoto, and to the north by the municipality of Caquiaviri.

The municipality has 140 localities ( Localidades ), central location of the municipality is Charaña with 817 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) at the very western edge of the county.

Geography

The municipality Charaña is on an average height of 4100 m south of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east. The region has a semi-arid climate Charaña because not enough rainfall for crop growth during the course of more than six months. The average annual temperature in the municipality of Charaña is 8.3 ° C, annual rainfall is only 300 mm. The region has a pronounced diurnal climate, the monthly average temperatures vary only slightly between some 5 ° C from June to July and just over 10 ° C from November to January. The monthly rainfall range from less than 10 mm in the months of May to October and about 50 mm from December to March.
