Charles Augustus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1844–1894)

Karl August Wilhelm Nicolaus Alexander Michael Bernhard Heinrich Friedrich Stephan von Sachsen -Weimar- Eisenach ( * July 31, 1844 in Weimar, † November 20, 1894 in Roquebrune- Cap- Martin) was Grand Duke of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach and Duke of Saxony.

Life

Karl August was the only son of Grand Duke Karl Alexander of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach (1818-1901) from his marriage to Princess Sophie (1827-1897), daughter of King William II of the Netherlands. He studied at the University of Jena, Leipzig and Heidelberg. Charles Augustus served in the Grand Duchy of Saxony Army and was second lieutenant in the Imperial Russian hussar regiment Ingria. He wore the Grand Cross of the House Order of the White Falcon and the House Order of the Golden Lion. On his father's side he participated in the imperial proclamation in Versailles in part on 18th January 1871.

Charles Augustus married on August 26, 1873 in Friedrichshafen, a cousin 2nd degree; Princess Pauline (1852-1904) was a daughter of Prince Hermann of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach (1825-1901) and Princess Auguste (1826-1898), youngest daughter of King William I of Württemberg. The wedding date was postponed; originally was scheduled to take place in Weimar occasion of the wedding the premiere of the opera Aida outside Italy.

Karl August's mother was after Princess Wilhelmina, the next in the Dutch throne. This claim was accordingly transferred to their offspring. As a presumptive successor to the Dutch throne Karl August had fluently speak and write Dutch learned.

In spare time was devoted to the Hereditary Grand Duke of his collection of engravings and his coin collection.
