Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry

Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry ( * ca 1698, † October 22, 1778 ) was a Scottish nobleman.

Charles Douglas was the son of James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry and his wife Mary Boyle. He inherited from his father in 1711 the title of Duke of Queensberry. He was Privy Councillor, Vice- Admiral, Lord Privy Seal (since 1761) and Lord Justice General of Scotland ( since 1763 ). He was appointed in 1706 to Lord Douglas of Lockerbie, Dalveen and Thornhill, Viscount of Tiberris and Earl of Solway. This title expired with his death but once.

The Duke was with his wife, a great patron of the writer John Gay, who also spent his twilight years at the Duke and Duchess.

Charles Douglas married in 1720 Catherine, daughter of Henry Hyde, 4th Earl of Clarendon with whom he had two sons:

  • Henry (1722-1754), Earl of Drumlanrig
  • Charles (1726-1756), Earl of Drumlanrig

As his sons died before him, the son of his cousin William Douglas, 2nd Earl of March, William was succeeded as Duke of Queensberry. The title of Duke of Dover died out in contrast.
