Charles Lavigerie

Charles Martial Allemand Lavigerie ( born October 31, 1825 Huire in Bayonne, France, † November 26, 1892 in Algiers, Algeria) was a French Roman Catholic cardinal and Founder.

Life

Charles Martial Allemand Lavigerie was ordained a priest on June 2, 1849. He became in 1854 professor of church history at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1861 and auditor at the Roman Rota.

In 1863 he was appointed Bishop of Nancy. He received his episcopal consecration on March 22, 1863 Clément Cardinal Villecourt. Already in 1867 he became archbishop of Algiers.

In 1868 he founded the White Fathers and White Sisters in 1869 as a missionary societies in Africa. In 1872 he consecrated the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers.

In the consistory of 27 March 1882 he was by Pope Leo XIII. taken as a cardinal priest with the titular church of S. Agnese fuori le mura in the College of Cardinals. In 1884 he was also Archbishop of Carthage and Primate of Africa.
