Charles R. Van Hise

Charles Richard Van Hise (* May 29, 1857 in Fulton, Rock County, Wisconsin, † November 19, 1918 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was an American geologist.

Van Hise studied geology and engineering. He was one of the most respected geologists of his time and taught at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, which he was president from 1903 to 1918. He also worked from 1909 to 1918 for the government as a consultant to the United States Geological Survey. In 1916 he was also President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1905 he was elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In his honor, was awarded the Van Hise rock its name.
