Children's Laureate

Children's Laureate is a literary award similar award that is awarded in the UK for the author and illustrator of children's books for a period of two years. With the award, a cash prize of 10,000 pounds sterling originally connected. Meanwhile, the price was increased to 15,000 pounds.

The idea for this sprang from a conversation between the price Poet Laureate Ted Hughes and children's book author Michael Morpurgo.

A number of jurors selects the proposals from libraries, literary critics, publishers or booksellers, and in particular of the International Board on Books for Young People ( IBBY ), the kürenden to candidates. Moreover, the jury also considered direct suggestions of children and adolescents.

The award is funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and a number of industry sponsors and wealthy patrons. The main sponsor is now the publisher Waterstone's, the leading chain store booksellers in the UK. Initially joined Otakar 's main sponsor, but this faded away with the merger of both companies.

The Executive Jury 2007-2009 Shami Chakrabarti had held, the director of advocacy Liberty. Her successor was the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion.

Since 2010, Ireland has with the Laureate na nÓg an equivalent to this price.
