Chinchilla (Queensland)

Chinchilla is a town of about 3,600 inhabitants in the Australian state of Queensland. Chinchilla is located 293 km north-west of Brisbane and 185 kilometers east of Roma on the Warrego Highway. The city is located in the administrative area (LGA ) Western Downs region.

The city was founded in 1877 as one the railway from Brisbane via Toowoomba further expanded by Dalby. The banks of the Charley Creek seemed an ideal place for a city.

Agriculture was a long time the main source of the city, especially the cattle and pigs, but also the production of wool. With the commodity boom of recent years, the Kogan Creek power plant and other coal and gas projects, the city experienced strong growth and house prices went up significantly.

Chinchilla is known with the annual Chinchilla Melon Festival also known as melon capital of Australia.

When the floods in Queensland in 2011 had the place about two weeks apart, even evacuated twice.
