Chionodoxa

Large bluebell ( Chionodoxa forbesii )

The Star Hyacinths ( Chionodoxa ), also known as snow shine and snow pride, are a genus within the subfamily Scilloideae. The botanical genus name is from the Greek words Chionodoxa chion derived for snow and doxa ( δόξα ) for opinion, view, reputation, honor, fame, glory, pride, splendor; the direct translation of "Snow gloss " and " snow Pride" is often used for these species. Home ranges of the species are in the Mediterranean region and in Asia Minor.

Description

Chionodoxa species are perennial herbaceous plants. These geophytes form small, oval to spherical onions in a brown envelope ( " Tunic " ) as outlasting. The Onion only two undergraduate, erect or spreading leaves are usually formed; they are simple and parallel-veined.

On an inflorescence stems are in a terminal, racemose inflorescence one to several flowers together loosely with a maximum of one bract per flower. The hermaphrodite flowers are triple. The six identically shaped bracts are short fused Roehrig at their base. The free part of the bloom spread apart or bent back. The flowers are white or blue, usually with a white background. There are two circles, each with three stamens present. The different-sized, broad and flattened stamens form around a central cone to ovary and style. The three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. There are Septalnektarien available.

The three-lobed and insulated draft tube capsule fruit contains 3-18 black, more or less spherical, wingless seeds with elaiosomes.

System

The genus belongs to the tribe Hyacintheae within the subfamily Scilloideae.

Some authors include the species to the genus Scilla L. A synonym for Chionodoxa Boiss. is: Scilla sectio Nigriscilla series Chionodoxa.

There are only about six to eight Chionodoxa types:

  • Whitish bluebell ( Chionodoxa albescens ( Speta ) Rix is found in recent literature as a subspecies of Scilla nana ( Schult. & Schult f ) Speta. ): The home is Crete.
  • Large bluebell or Blue Snow Cross ( Chionodoxa forbesii Baker, Syn: Scilla forbesii ( Baker) Speta ): The home is the south-western Turkey.
  • Bluebell Cypriot or Cypriot Snow Cross ( Chionodoxa lochiae Meikle, syn. Scilla lochiae ( Meikle ) Speta ): It is a rare endemic of the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus.
  • Common bluebell or Viburnum pride, Lydian snow pride, Lydian bluebell ( Chionodoxa luciliae Boiss, Syn. Scilla luciliae ( Boiss. ) Speta )
  • Small bluebell or Little snow pride ( Chionodoxa nana Boiss & Heldr, Syn: .. Scilla nana ( Schult. & Schult f ) Speta. ): The home is Crete.
  • Dark bluebell, Sardis Snowgleam or Dark Snow Cross ( Chionodoxa sardensis Whittall ex Barr & Sugden, syn. Scilla sardensis ( Whitall ex Barr & Sugden ) Speta ): The home is the Western Turkey.
  • Sprawling bluebell or usury Santander Snow Cross ( Chionodoxa siehei Stapf, is provided as a synonym to Scilla forbesii ( Baker) Speta ): The home is the Western Turkey.

A natural hybrid is Chionodoxa siehei × Chionodoxa luciliae.

The genre hybrids occur, example: × Chionoscilla allenii J. Allen ex G. Nicholson from Chionodoxa forbesii and Scilla bifolia.

There are a number of hybrids that can be used as ornamental plants. They tend in temperate latitudes for naturalizing and then to invasive plants.
