Chitral Somapala

Chitral " Chity " Somapala (* November 4, 1966 in Colombo, Ceylon ) is a Hard Rock and Heavy Metal singer.

Life

Somapala was born as the fourth child of a family of musicians. Both father P.L.A. Somapala and the mother Chitra Somapala were well-known folk singer in Sri Lanka. P.L.A. Somapala also worked as a composer, arranger and producer for film music. At the age of 10 years Chitral, Chity ' Somapala began with guitar lessons, with 14 he switched to bass guitar and began to sing it short. At the age of 17 years he has performed with leading musicians and bands in the country in the night clubs of the capital.

In 1985 he became a member of the alternative band Shock, which had been founded by the keyboardist and pioneer of computer-based music production in Sri Lanka, Diliup Gabadamudalige in Sri Lanka. In 1986, he toured as a bassist and vocalist of the top 40 band Rendezvous (later renamed Friends ) by Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Finland, partly as support for bands of the respective countries.

1994 returned Somapala the top 40 scene back in order to focus primarily on a career as Hardrock-/Heavy-Metal-Sänger. In 1996 he joined the German Hardrock-/Underground-Band Court Jester, with whom he recorded the album Forced to believe.

In Sri Lanka Somapala reached cult status through the song Nadee Ganga Tharanaye which was aired from 1998 as Fernseh-/Radio-Werbesong the resident " Lion Beer" brewery and still is popular - unique due to the initial combination of hard rock music with lyrics in the national language Sinhala.

Shortly thereafter, he joined the German Melodic / Power / prog rock band Avalon at as a singer and frontman. At the production Charlie Bauerfeind was involved. 2002 Somapala composed the song Greenlands Theme for Isipathana International Rugby Championships in Sri Lanka together with guitarist Frank Rohles, a member of the German Queen tribute band Innuendo. This collaboration resulted in the melodic rock band Faro, the album Dawn of Forever at MTM Music published in 2003. In the same year the album Echoes of a Nightmare with the Swedish symphonic metal band Moonlight Agony emerged.

The end of 2003 followed Somapala an invitation from the Greek guitarist Gus G whose band Firewind in January 2004 on a headlining tour of Japan to accompany. After the tour Somapala became a permanent member of the band and worked with Gus G. Album Forged by Fire, which made ​​it to the top 100 in the Japanese charts. After the subsequent tour with Hammerfall during the Ice Breaker Festival Somapala left the band in 2005 for personal reasons.

In 2006, Somapala his own band Civilization One ( album Revolution Rising ersch 2007), which was disbanded in 2010.

In addition, he works with the German Prog / Metal band Red Circuit and the British Classic-Rock-/Metal-Band Rekuiem, one of the founders of the New Wave of British Heavy - Metal movement of the 1980s. 2010 Somapala new singer / frontman of the English power metal band Power Quest.

Somapala lives in Trier and teaches bass and singing at the Modern Music School.

Style
