Chris Kraus (director)

Christopher " Chris " John Kraus ( born 1963 in Göttingen ) is a German author and film director.

Life

Chris Kraus worked as a journalist and illustrator before he studied until 1998, Berlin Director in 1991 at the German Film and Television Academy. Since 1994 he worked as a dramaturgical consultant and author for Volker Schlöndorff, Rosa von Praunheim, Detlev Buck and other directors. For television, he took several commissioned works, such as the screenplay for individual episodes of the series Motzki and for the crime comedy Marga Engel strikes back.

In 2002 his first novel was published under the title Shattered Glass, which he himself, among others with Margit Carstensen and Jürgen Vogel, filmed. Book and film tell the ratio of a patient suffering from leukemia young man to his alcoholic mother. In 2006, Kraus his second feature film, Four Minutes ( with Monica Bleibtreu, Hannah heart jump and Nadja Uhl ) ready, which attracted attention in 2007 in some international film festivals before the official release in February. In the center of the plot is a musically gifted young woman sitting as auto-aggressive murderer in prison.

The film shattered glass has been awarded several prizes, so the Bavarian Film Award 2002 in the category Young Director, the European Film Awards 2003 at the 6th International Film Festival Mallorca and the German Screenplay Award. Four minutes won the Bavarian Film Awards 2007 in four categories, including Best Screenplay. For his second feature film Kraus also received the German Film Award in 2007. In 2010 he released his feature film Poll ( with Paula Beer, Edgar Selge and Jeanette Hain ), whose action it the biography of his great-aunt Oda Schaefer had inspired. Theatrical release in Germany was on February 3, 2011. Poll won, among others, the Special Jury Prize at the Festival Internazionale del film di Roma, as well as the top prize Golden Beavers at Filmfest Biberach and was awarded the Bavarian Film Awards 2010 in three categories and the German Film Award in four categories.

His debut as an opera director Chris Kraus was with Ludwig van Beethoven's Fidelio in 2008 at the Teatro Valli di Reggio Emilia together with the conductor Claudio Abbado. You could see this production, in which the Viennese Arnold Schoenberg Choir and the Coro di Communidad di Madrid participated also at the Teatro Real ( Madrid), the Festspielhaus Baden- Baden, the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara and the Teatro Comunale " Pavarotti " in Modena.

Together with the directors Tom Tykwer, Robert Thalheim, Axel Ranisch and director Julia von Heinz turned Chris Kraus the documentary " Pink Baby " (2012) about the relationship to their common " film father " and mentor Rosa von Praunheim.
