Tom Tykwer

Tom Tykwer [ tɪkvɐ ] (* May 23, 1965 in Wuppertal, North Rhine -Westphalia ) is a German film director, screenwriter, film producer and film composer. His best known works are running, among other things Lola Perfume - The Story of a Murderer and The International, starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. Furthermore, he took along with Lana and Andy Wachowski, the director, the script and the production of the sci-fi movie Cloud Atlas.

Life

Tykwer made with eleven years his first Super - 8 films and worked with thirteen as a projectionist. In Berlin, he was manager of the 1988 Moviemento movie theater in Kreuzberg. In 1992 he founded with producer Stefan Arndt, the company Romance and staged first as director two short films.

With Deadly Maria and hibernators him then pass acclaimed early successes. He founded in 1994 together with Stefan Arndt, Wolfgang Becker and Dani Levy, the production company X-Filme Creative Pool. 1998 his third film, Run Lola Run, also a great success with the public. It was followed by 2000 The Princess and the Warrior 2002 and his first international production Heaven. In 2004 he turned his short film True that, je t'aime is a part of the compilation film Paris. Then he directed Perfume - The Story of a Murderer Director, a film adaptation of the novel by Patrick Süskind.

2008 Tykwer finished the work on the German - American co-production The International starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts in the lead roles. The film presents an Interpol agent and a New York prosecutor at the center who are planning to uncover the illegal activities of a powerful bank. For further ensemble cast include Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ulrich Thomsen and James Rebhorn. The thriller opened in early February 2009, the 59th edition of the Berlin Film Festival, where The International was shown out of competition.

In the same year, initiated by Tykwer omnibus film Germany 09, at the Fatih Akın, Wolfgang Becker, Dominik Graf, Sylke Enders, Romuald Karmakar, Nicolette Krebitz, Isabelle Stever, Hans Steinbichler and Hans Weingartner renowned German -speaking directors were involved appeared. The project was inspired by the film Germany in Autumn (1978). From Tykwer himself comes the short film " Solemnly travels " with Benno Fürmann in the lead role. Germany 09 was premiered on 13 February 2009 at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival and went there out of competition.

In November 2009, Tykwer made in and around Berlin the tragicomic film Three, his first in German language for ten years. The main roles Sophie Rois, Devid STRIESOW and Sebastian Schipper play. The theatrical release in Germany was on 23 December 2010. The world premiere took place at the 67th International Film Festival in Venice, where the film was also in the official competition for the Golden Lion. 2011 were followed for three six nominations for the German Film Awards 2011, including Best in the categories of Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Score (together with Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil and Gabriel Isaac Mounsey ). Tykwer was awarded the Director's Award.

As of 2009, Tykwer has worked with the Wachowski siblings at the film adaptation of the book Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Cloud Atlas had its premiere on 8 September 2012 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Along with directors Chris Kraus, Robert Thalheim, Axel Ranisch and director Julia von Heinz turned Tykwer documentary Rosa Children ( 2012) on the relationship to their common " film father " and mentor Rosa von Praunheim.

Together with Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, he also writes the music for his films.

By 2002, Tykwer was associated with Franka Potente. Since 2009, he is married to Marie Steinmann, the couple has a child.
