Germany in the fall is an episodic film, in 1977 deals with the German society at the time of the RAF terrorism immediately after the " German Autumn ". The work on the co-production of eleven different directors of the so-called New German Cinema - among them Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff and Alexander Kluge - started in late 1977; 1978 collage of some documentary, some scenic narrative episodes was first shown.
Content
The plot of the film takes place in the week after the 18th October 1977 the " night of death master home " where the state funeral for Hanns Martin Schleyer, the minutes of silence on the assembly line at the Daimler - Benz plant in Stuttgart, talking with workers and the burial of the dead terrorists from ordinary home are shown. Other episodes show a young history teacher, who is confronted with the consequences of the radical adoption as well as the inconsistencies of the official history, or describe in short sequences of scenes, the tense, almost hysterical atmosphere in the population. Rainer Werner Fassbinder interviewed his mother Liselotte Eder, whose political conformism he vehemently criticized. Volker Schlöndorff plays himself in a designed, among others, Heinrich Böll episode as a theater director whose performance of the Antigone of Sophocles is censored, because the depiction of ancient fabric could be interpreted as a call to violence and terrorism.

The last minutes of the film consist of pictures of the funeral and the funeral march for Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan -Carl Raspe in October 1977, to which the song Here's to you, Nicola and Bart by Joan Baez on the two 1927 in the United States in a controversial process anarchists sentenced to death, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti is heard.
Schlöndorff, who had been as Böll and the other directors criticized for the film, said of his work on Germany in the fall:
" After such a work with this film, for the experiences that you do this, you no longer wonder why there are so-called terrorists, but how is it that there is not much more out there. How is that not all lash out comes. "

The complete team in 1978 received the German Film Award, a Film Award.
Subsequent films
There were two similar episode movies from German speaking filmmakers in the footsteps of Germany in the fall, only the film New Germany (1993 ) then Germany 09 where Fatih Akın, Wolfgang Becker, Dominik Graf, Sylke Enders, Romuald Karmakar, Nicolette Krebitz, Isabelle Stever, Hans Steinbichler, Tom Tykwer and Hans Weingartner have created an episodic film on the situation in Germany in 2009, which on 13 February 2009, at the Berlin premiere. The project consists of both feature films and documentaries episodes and is inspired by the idea of Germany in Autumn (1978).
