Christian August II, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg

Duke Christian August of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- August Castle ( born July 19, 1798 in Copenhagen, † March 11, 1869 in Primkenau ) was founded in 1814 head of the Augustenburger line of the House of Oldenburg. Politically, he advocated the independence of Schleswig and Holstein from Denmark. After the failure of his efforts he made under duress in 1852 a political activity waiver, without, however, formally give up his rights of succession.

Life and work

He was the eldest son of Frederick Christian II and Princess Louise Auguste of Denmark, which is why his father filed for hereditary claims to the Danish throne. Christian August's sister Caroline Amalie was married to King Christian VIII of Denmark. His brother Frederick was in 1842, governor of Schleswig -Holstein.

He himself was a proponent of Schleswig-Holstein movement. His goal was a united Schleswig -Holstein in the German Confederation with a liberal constitution and himself as Duke. He also claimed the Danish throne in the complicated succession question. In 1837 he published an anonymous brochure entitled The succession of Schleswig -Holstein.

Christian August was in 1831 and 1836 due to a Virilstimme member of the Schleswig estates assembly. He subsequently joined the German friendly Schleswig-Holstein party. In 1846, he protested against the " open letter " of the Danish King Christian VIII by his resignation in the national assembly. In 1848 he was elected a deputy of the Prussian National Assembly. In the years 1848 and 1849 supported the Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein independence movement. After the end of the Schleswig-Holstein War and the Olomouc punctuation he was banished. In 1852 he transferred his possessions in Schleswig -Holstein to Denmark, but by no means renounced his rights of succession. Subsequently lived Christian August as lords of the manor in the Lower Silesian Primkenau and transferred his ducal entitlements in 1863 to his eldest son, Frederick.
