Christian Bergström

Christian Bergström ( born July 19, 1967 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish tennis player.

Life

Bergström was a Swedish national junior champion in 1984 and the following year the European junior champion. In the same year he reached the semi-finals of the junior competition of the U.S. Open and was subsequently a professional tennis player. In the following two years he was able to win an ATP Challenger tournament in each case, in 1988 he stood for the first time at the Swedish Open in the semifinals of an ATP tournament. His greatest successes were the successive runners-up in Adelaide in 1992 and 1993, where he still gave the match after each recovered first sentence. In doubles, he also stood at the side of his compatriot Magnus Gustafsson in the final of the Swedish Open 1992. Though he was never able to win a tournament victory in his career, he reached 1992 position 32 of the tennis world rankings in the singles and position 333 in doubles.

His best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments were reaching the quarter- finals of the Australian Open in 1993, where he defeated in the first round, Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg was ultimately unsuccessful, and two quarter- finals at Wimbledon. Here he was defeated in 1990 Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker in 1994.

Bergström played 1991-1992 three singles and a double batch for the Swedish Davis Cup team. He was able to win all its games, including his singles match against Richard Fromberg 5-0 victory over Australia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in 1992.
