Christina of Holstein-Gottorp

Christina of Holstein -Gottorp (born 12 or April 13, 1573 in Kiel, † December 8, 1625 at Gripsholm Castle ) was the second wife of the Swedish king Charles IX. and 1604-1611 Queen of Sweden.

Life

Christine was the daughter of the Duke Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein -Gottorp (1526-1586) and his wife Christine of Hesse ( 1543-1604 ). She was supposed King Sigismund III. Vasa (1566-1632) married, but the promise broke. Christine, who never relatives this pain, then became the second wife of the future Swedish king Charles IX. ( 1550-1611 ). The wedding took place at the castle of Nyköping on August 22, 1592. On March 15, 1607 she was crowned solemnly together with her husband in Uppsala Cathedral.

Christine is described as blond and tall woman. She went to frugal with the budget of the Court. Compared to their children, they proved to be assertive. She turned away for reasons of state reasons successfully against the love affair of her son Gustav Adolf with Ebba Brahe and prevented her youngest child Carl Philip was 1612/13 King of Russia.

After the death of her husband ( 1611) and the loss of her beloved son Charles Philip ( 1622) she lived in seclusion in the family circle. Christina of Holstein -Gottorp is buried beside her husband in Södermanland in the Cathedral of Strängnäs.
