Christoph Dreher

Christoph Dreher (* 1952 in Nuremberg, Germany) is a German author, filmmaker and musician. Since 2000 he teaches Audiovisual Media.

Life and work

After studying political science and philosophy at the Free University in Berlin (Diploma 1978) he visited 1978-1983 the German Film and Television Academy Berlin ( DFFB ).

As a director, realized Christoph Dreher audiovisual works since 1979, yet as a film student were, beside several music videos -. Partially even before the foundation of MTV - for Skin ( The Caribbean Western) and Nick Cave ( Tupelo, The Singer and Mercy Seat), the full-length movie OK OK - the Modern dance ( along with Mühlenbrock ), the found-footage study Commercial - 40 One- minute Adventures in the World of TV ( with Gusztav Hamos ) and the feature film Treatment The legionaries ( with Ellen El Malki ).

In numerous documentaries and lined up Dreher dealt with topics in the field of popular culture, with a particular focus on music. So he conceived the series Lost in Music, which treated the entire spectrum of contemporary pop music and related cultures and lifestyles in the 90s in a total of 18 one-hour episodes. ( He co-produced the series with Rolf S. Wolkenstein and directed about half of the episodes. )

In 1980 he founded, together with Martin Peter the " post-punk " - / " post-rock " band The skin (the first cast also with Thomas Wydler and Remo Park ). The name was inspired by the eponymous book by the German - Italian author Curzio Malaparte. Apart from Dreher with changing members ( the most enduring occupation was by Dreher, Thomas Wydler, Rainer Lingk and Jochen Arbeit ), the band until 2000 and was then producing numerous records. Actually, an instrumental band, handed their influences from bands of the 60s such as Quicksilver Messenger Service, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and The Stooges to late - 70s bands like the New York DNA, they cooperated with many international singers such as Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Debbie Harry.

Since 2000, Dreher is a professor of audiovisual media at the Merz Academy of Design in Stuttgart.
