Christoph Hein

Christoph Hein ( born April 8, 1944 in Heinzendorf ( Jasienica ) in Münsterberg ( Ziębice ), Silesia ) is a German writer, translator and essayist.

Life

Christoph Hein grew up in the small town of Bad Duben near Leipzig. Since he was not a child laborer, the son of a pastor and he got no place in an Extended High School, he went to a high school in West Berlin until the construction of the Wall. After the wall was built, he worked as an assembly worker, booksellers, waiters, journalist, actor and assistant director. In 1964 he resigned his Abitur at night school. In Berlin and Leipzig he studied 1967-1971 philosophy and logic. He then became a dramaturge and author at the Volksbühne in East Berlin. Since 1979 he works as a freelance writer.

Became known Christoph Hein by its very successful novella The Strange friend, which was published in 1982 in the GDR and in 1983 appeared as Dragon's Blood in West Germany because of the title protection. His most successful piece of The True Story of Ah Q was published in 1983. As a translator, he edited works of Jean Racine and Molière. From 1998 to 2000 Christoph Hein was the first president of the all-German PEN Club. He was until July 2006 co-editor of the weekly newspaper Friday. Christoph Hein with his now deceased wife, the movie director Christiane Hein, two sons, the younger is the writer and physician Jacob Hein. Since 2011 Christoph Hein is married to opera singer Maria Husmann. Hein is a member of the Saxon Academy of Arts.

On 8 October 2004 confirmed the Berlin Culture Senator Thomas Flierl that with Christoph Hein are led negotiations over the directorship of the German theater. Hein should take over the theater from the season 2006/2007 and thus from Bernd Wilms be, whose contract was not renewed. On December 29, 2004 Hein gave numerous reviews from the world of theater and the press at a press conference announced that he would not be able to serve as artistic director in 2006.
