Cichlasomatinae

" Cichlasoma " trimaculatum

The Cichlasomatini are a tribe of American cichlid subfamily Cichlinae. The range extends from the Orinoco River in northern South America, over the Amazon Basin to northern Argentina. The Cichlasomatini include the Maroni cichlid ( Cleithracara maronii ) and the Blaupunkt cichlid ( Andinoacara pulcher ), which are popular aquarium fish.

Features

The close relationship of these outwardly different genera based on molecular studies and is poorly supported by morphological features. They are laterally flattened, high backs and very little stretched and therefore represent the " basic pattern " of cichlids without particularly different body shapes, such as those occur in the Heroini or Geophagini. All Cichlasomatini have relatively large scales, a characteristic arrangement of the scales before the dorsal fin ( with eight scales on the center line instead of more than 10 scales). All are substrate spawners.
