Cienciano

The Club Sportivo Cienciano, usually abbreviated Cienciano, is a football club from the Peruvian city of Cusco. The club plays in the Primera División Peruana, the highest Peruvian football league.

History

The club was founded as a university team in 1901. The first members were students at the Colegio Nacional Ciencias del Cusco. Initially, the club took part, especially at regional championships and competitions. In 1973 Cienciano first part in the national title competitions. Between 1978 and 1983 the team played so second-rate. Only for playing time in 1984 was followed by the return. In the league, now reformed, but succeeded in the first year after the comeback in the South Zone no good showing. In 1986, this should be better than the club moved into the second round of the championship games. There, however, one was eliminated already in the first round against Deportivo Municipal. Three years later, the club made ​​it to the quarter-finals. After a 0-2 home defeat, the 2-1 win was not enough in the second leg against Universitario de Deportes in order to advance to the semifinals. After re- reformation of the League for the 1992 season Cienciano moved as the sixth of sixteen teams in the qualifying round to participate in the Copa Libertadores one. However, the association failed. Henceforth CS Cienciano was often near the top teams in the league.
