The South Korean film has after an initial heyday in the late 50s and 60s from 1990 retrieved in importance and this time drawn worldwide attention. This is known as the New Wave of South Korean film. It originated as a result of competition in the film industry, the training of directors abroad, and novel scripts, younger writers and lesser use of Hollywood clichés.

The influence of the Busan International Film Festival ( BIFF ) and the Jeonju film festivals may in this case be as little underestimated as the awarding of the South Korean Blue Dragon and Grand Bell Awards, which are now considered as the most important awards.
