Cissonius

Cissonius, also Cisonius, Cisnius, Cesonios, was a late ancient Celtic god. The name was interpreted as " Brave ", " Bye " but also " car driver ". Presumably, he was god of trade and protector when traveling. In the interpretatio romana he is therefore equated with Mercury.

Mythology

Cissonius was in Gaul alongside Visucius most common epithet of Mercury, his inscriptions extending from France to southern Germany and Switzerland to Italy. He was represented as a bearded helmeted man riding on a ram with a goblet of wine, or as a young man with winged helmet and caduceus, which accepts as offerings cock and goat.

In an inscription from Promontogno (AE | 1992 | 01300 ) Cissonus is equated with Matutinus or Matunus. The name of the municipality in the district of Ahrweiler Niederzissen probably goes back to his worship.
