City of Swan

The City of Swan is one of 30 administrative districts ( Local Government Areas) of the Perth metropolitan area in Western Australia.

Location and Geography

The City of Swan is located on the northeastern outskirts of Perth and is 1042 km ², the largest Local Government Area of the agglomeration of this city. It comprises 80,000 inhabitants spread over 37 districts (as of 2006), the de facto neighborhoods and satellite towns of Perth constitute the south of the district, while the northern districts include smaller housing estates and wineries amidst the vineyards of the Swan Valley on both sides of the Swan River. In the north the municipality borders on the marked of eucalyptus forests, Acacia and Banksia bushland with granite formations Walyunga National Park.

The self-understanding of the City of Swan is an emerging economic region, which is expected to double its population by 2020.

Characteristics

  • Guildford is the oldest settlement founded by James Stirling in 1829 Swan River Colony. By 1970 it was the administrative seat of the Local Government Area. A number of historic buildings from the colonial period have been restored.
  • The current administrative seat of the City of Swan ( to 2000 Shire of Swan ) is located since 1970 in Midland, as the hitherto independent Township was included in the Local Government Area. The quasi -knit bedroom community with Perth Midland constitutes the heart of the industrial nature City of Swan.
  • The Swan Valley, which includes 300 ha area of the district is the oldest wine growing region in Western Australia. The nucleus is located in Middle Swan and Caversham with the largest wineries in the state, Houghton and Sandalford. Spread over various districts are approximately 80 small and medium sized wineries. From the wine-growing districts are also dominated West Swan, of Herne Hill, Henley Brook, Millendon, Baskerville and Belhus. Except for the height of Henley Brook, the expedition of James Stirling arrived in 1827. In this district, the oldest church is located in Greater Perth ( All Saints Church ).
  • In Brigadoon and Upper Swan wine region turns into the typical landscape of the Walyunga National Park. The municipality has picnic areas and hiking paths that are particularly committed to like wildflower season in September / October.
  • Whiteman is known for its wine-growing next to the zoo and pottery.
  • Some districts are dominated by sports (golf in The Vines, skating and tennis in Beechboro, Ballajura, Bullsbrook ).
