City Road tube station

City Road is the name of a closed London Underground station. It is located in the London Borough of Islington, between today's stations Old Street and Angel on the eastern part of the Northern Line ( the so-called City - branch). In operation it was from 1901 to 1922.

History

The station was opened as part of the commissioning of the distance between Moorgate and Angel on 17 November 1901. On August 8, 1922, the entire section between Moorgate and Euston was closed to extend the tunnel profile and to the rolling stock of the line to be able to renew. During this work, we also extended the platforms, to reflect the level of traffic in the longer trains. However, since these works were quite expensive, the least used station City Road was not rebuilt and remained even after the re- opening of the line on April 20, 1924 still closed.

Later, the station learned, like many others in London, then another use as an air raid shelter. Today, hardly anything can be seen from the station. Only a vent above the elevator shafts former testifies to the former use.
