Claribel Alegría

Claribel Alegría ( born May 12, 1924 in Estelí, Nicaragua ) is a Nicaraguan writer. Her work has been translated into 14 languages.

Life

Claribel Alegría was the daughter of a Nicaraguan and a Salvadorienserin. She grew up in Santa Ana, a town in the west of El Salvador and therefore sees himself as Salvadorienserin. 1932, at the age of eight years she experienced La Matanza, an ethnocide, in which some 30,000 landless and indigenous people died.

After attending school in Santa Ana Alegría was in 1943 in the United States and studied at the George Washington University in Washington DC. 1948, she graduated with a Master of Arts from. Between 1944 and 1947 Juan Ramón Jiménez was her mentor.

Claribel Alegría was married until his death in 1995 with the American writer Darwin J. Flakoll. Together the couple has four children. The family lived a long time in the U.S. and several European countries. 1985 Alegría returned with her husband to return Nicaragua to support the consolidation of society after the Civil War and to represent the non-violence.
