Claude-Henri Belgrand de Vaubois

Claude -Henri de Belgrand Vaubois ( born October 1, 1748 in Clairvaux, today Ville- sous- la- Ferté belonging; † November 5, 1839 in Beauvais ) was a French general.

Life

Already as a teenager was Belgrand de Vaubois cadet in the royal army. He could soon distinguished by bravery and was promoted regularly. At the beginning of Revolutioin he was captain of artillery, and two years later he was already in the rank of lieutenant - colonels.

Belgrand de Vaubois was général de brigade as a member of the staff of Napoleon, when he embarked on his 1796 campaign in Italy. In the fighting before Rovereto (4 September 1796), Bassano (8 September 1796) and Arcole ( 15./17. September 1796 ) Belgrand de Vaubois showed brave. When he was able to return to France in 1797, General Barthelemy Catherine Joubert, became his successor.

When in 1798 Napoleon planned his expedition to Egypt, Belgrand de Vaubois was again a member of the General Staff. On the way to Egypt Napoleonic troops raided on June 9, 1798 Order of Malta in Malta. Already the next day Valetta was taken and after Malta had been restructured according to the French way, Napoleon Belgrand de Vaubois summoned to commander -in-chief of the isles de Malte et du Goze.

On September 2, 1798, the inhabitants of Malta revolted against the French occupation, and were supported from 18 September by a small Portuguese fleet. In February 1799, British troops started to besiege under the leadership of Admiral Alexander Ball Valetta. On September 4, 1800 Belgrand de Vaubois revealed with the rest of his troops. After the surrender negotiations, he was brought together with the French soldiers under British guard back to Marseille.

Belgrand de Vaubois resigned all his military offices. He released in politics and was elected on July 27, 1800 for Senator. Even after Napoleon's " rule of the Hundred Days, " he no longer joined at this. In 1830 he retired from public life and settled in Beauvais. There he died at the age of 91 years on November 5, 1839 and found his final resting place.
