Claus Cito

Nicolas Joseph ' Claus ' Cito ( born May 26, 1882 in Bascharage, † October 10, 1965 ) was a Luxembourgian sculptor. His most famous work is the War Memorial Gëlle Fra.

Life

Claus Cito grew up in poor circumstances in a family of blacksmiths, who was of Italian descent. " Josy " Cito, as he was called in his home, had lost his own mother at the age of three years and was henceforth promoted by a social worker. From 1900 he studied at the School of Applied Arts Dusseldorf and later at the Académie des Beaux -Arts in Brussels. He was supported by the director of the school, the German Peter Behrens. 1903 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. An intensive cooperation he developed with the sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Cito was his right hand.
