Clemente Isnard

Clemente José Carlos de Gouvea Isnard OSB ( born July 8, 1917 in Rio de Janeiro; † August 24, 2011 in Recife ) was a Brazilian priest and bishop of Nova Friburgo.

Life

From 1931 he studied at the Law Faculty of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, a study, graduating in 1935 with a Bachelors degree in Law and Social Sciences. Then he joined a Benedictine monastery in Rio de Janeiro, where he obtained the perpetual vows on July 11, 1940 and was ordained priest on 19 December 1942 the Benedictines.

He was born on April 23, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. appointed Bishop of Nova Friburgo. The Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil, Armando Lombardi, consecrated him on 25 July of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Bernard Denis Stewart, Bishop of Olinda e Recife, and Daniel Tavares Baeta Neves, Bishop of Januaria.

Clemente Isnard was a participant in the Second Vatican Council and a Council Father of all four sessions (1962-1965 ). He was a member of the National Council on the implementation of the liturgical constitution of the Council (1964-1969), Vice- President of the Brazilian Bishops Conference CNBB (1979-1982), head of the Liturgy Committee of the Latin American Bishops' Conference CELAM (1979-1982) and Second Vice President of CELAM (1983-1987 ). He was a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome. In 1967 he took part in the first Synod of Bishops and in 1979 participants of the Latin American Bishops' General Meeting in Puebla and 1992 in Santo Domingo.

On 17 July 1992, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. In 1994 he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of neighboring Duque de Caxias, he had this post until 2004.

In his book, Thoughts of a bishop to today's religious institutions ( Portuguese: reflexões de um bispo sobre as instituições eclesiásticas atuais ) Isnard campaigned for an end to compulsory celibacy and the ordination of women.
