Clifton, surnamed Norwegian Capitol of Texas, is a city in Bosque County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies on the Bosque River in the south of the county, just east of the geographic center of Texas and has a total area of 5 km ² without significant water surface.

History

In the winter of 1852/53 could be in the area several settlers down and called the place Clifftown based on the limestone walls that surrounded them (English: Limestone Cliffs ). Over the years the name changed in Clifton. A post office was set up in 1859 and 1861, the first church built.

1880 moved the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway train tracks built south of Clifton and built a station, after which the businessmen and traders moved closer to the station. In the following years, shifted so the whole city. Between 1890 and 1892 Clifton was also the county seat ( county seat ).

The nickname Norwegian Capital of Texas received Clifton and the surrounding area since it was almost exclusively populated mid-19th century by Norwegians and Germans.

Approximately 1.13% were of mixed descent, and 18.83 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,296 households, 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 % were married couples living together. 9.9 % had a female householder with no husband, and 33.3 % were non-families. 31.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.09 persons.

25.0 % of the population were under 18 years old, 6.6 % from 18 to 24, 22.3% 25-44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 81.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 75.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,867, and the median income for a family $ 41,548. Males have a median income of $ 27,472 versus $ 25,154 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,823. 12.7 % of the population and 9.6 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 14.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 20.0 % of those 65 or older.
