Coat of arms of Rhineland-Palatinate

The state coat of arms counts as well as the national flag to the emblems of Rhineland- Palatinate. It was determined in execution of Article 74 of the State Constitution by the law of 10 May 1948. The design is by Joseph Decku.

Coat of arms

Description

The country's coat of arms has the shape of the heraldic shield round. This is cleaved by an ascending -curved peak and shows in the front, a silver field, a red continuous cross in the back, a red field a silver sechsspeichiges wheel and in the ascending black lace and a red -winning reinforced golden lion. The coat of arms is surmounted by a golden crown people ( vine leaves ).

Importance

The coat of arms shows the symbols of the former electorates of Trier, Mainz and the Palatinate in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation:

  • The Palatinate Lion; occupied a golden crown with red lion is first detected under the Wittelsbach Count Palatine Otto the Illustrious in its rider's seal of 1229. However, it is probably older and presumably goes back to the Guelph Count Palatine of 1195 ruling until 1214.
  • The red St. George's cross on a white or silver background, attested landmark of the Archbishopric and Electorate of Trier. It first appeared in 1273 in the rear seal of Archbishop Henry II and represented the electoral state until the secularization in 1803.
  • As well as on a red background the silver six-spoked Wheel of Mainz of the diocese of Mainz, which is run in the seal also since the 13th century.

The crown of the Palatinate Lion is due to the special status of the dukes of Bavaria as " Count Palatine of the Rhine ".

The excessive People's crown five golden stylized grape leaves points to the importance of viticulture in Rhineland- Palatinate. Overall, six of the 13 German wine regions for quality and premium wine within the country's borders. The People's crown is no monarchical symbol, but a symbol of the sovereignty of the people.

The coat of arms is a simplified representation of the country's coat of arms and may not be used without permission. However, it must not be changed.

Coat Explanation: The three-part coat of arms of the country commands Rhineland-Palatinate Trier Porta Nigra shows as a sign that the command emerged from the former defense district headquarters 42 in Trier. The Wheel of Mainz serves as a symbol for the present location of Mainz, the Palatinate golden lion indicates the state of Rhineland -Palatinate.
