Cenred was the son of Cuthwine. About his grandfather Leodwald he led his origin on Occa ( Ocga ), a son of the dynasty 's founder Ida back. His brother Ceolwulf († 764 ) was 729-737 also King Northumbria.

Following the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was king Osred I. ( 706-716 ) 716 in a battle, probably in the fight against the Picts. William of Malmesbury, a chronicler of the 12th century, however, narrated that Osred victim to a conspiracy fell, but this is probably only a hypothesis. With Osreds death ended the almost unbroken kingdom of the descendants of Æthelfrith ( 592-616 ) and went with Cenred over to a private line. To Cenreds only two years in office, no details have been handed down, but puts a violent end near to short reign. After his death in 718 Osric succeeded to the throne, who was probably a younger brother of his predecessor Osred I..
