Cölestin Josef Ganglbauer

Celestine Joseph Ganglbauer OSB ( born August 20, 1817 in Thanstetten, today Schiedlberg, † December 14, 1889 in Vienna) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna.

Biography

Celestine Joseph Ganglbauer was the first of four children of small farmers and horse dealer Johann and Katharina Ganglbauer. He entered 1838 in the Benedictine monastery of Kremsmünster and was ordained priest on 22 July 1843. First, he was a chaplain in Neuhofen an der Krems, taught at Stiftsgymnasium, then was head of Stiftskonvikts and 1875 Prior On April 19 1876 he was elected abbot of Kremsmuenster and was the renovation of the pin and the Collegiate Church on the occasion of 1100 years celebration in 1877 to complete. He was also a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council.

At the banquet table at the 1100 - year celebration on August 18, 1877, Emperor Franz -Joseph was impressed because of the drinking award of the abbot. Ganglbauer founded the Vienna General Church Building Association to build new churches in the working class districts of Vienna. By supporting Anton Maria Schwartz was able to found on 24 November 1889, the Congregation of the Kalasantiner in Vienna, who has rendered the workers pastoral mission. Two years before the social encyclical Rerum Novarum he dedicated on February 20, 1889, the social question a pastoral letter. He also promoted the chant, sacred music and the Catholic Associations.

After his death he was buried in the crypt of St. Stephen's Cathedral. In 1886, in Vienna Ottakring ( 16th district ) was named the Ganglbauer alley after him.
