Computer-assisted translation

A computer-aided translation (English computer- aided translation, and computer - assisted translation, abbreviated CAT) is conducted by human translation of language with the help of computer programs.

Components

CAT systems usually consist of the following subsystems:

  • Translation memory system
  • Terminology database
  • Conversion programs to connect to word processing and desktop publishing programs
  • Alignment tools, in which already existing translations ( from two different files) are entered into the translation memory system
  • Projektmanagement-/Workflow-Komponenten

Computer-assisted translation versus machine translation

Programs for computer-aided translation does not translate itself but support the human translator ( the so-called " human translators " ) in his work. In contrast, a machine translation is done automatically without the need of a human translator.

However, there are mixed forms possible, in which a machine translation is checked and complemented by a human translator.
