Conceição do Jacuípe

Conceição do Jacuípe, popularly called Berimbau, is a village in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The village is about 20 km south of Feira de Santana and 90 km north of Salvador, about 400 meters above sea level on the border between the Recôncavo and the Backlands - Bahiano. The name comes from the old name feira do berimbau ( Berimbau German market).

Conceição do Jacuípe is the most important place of production of vegetables and herbs of the state of Bahia. Japanese and Polish immigrants began in the 60s of the 20th century, initially on a smaller scale with the plantations, which considerably widened with the passage of time. Other economic factors are tobacco cultivation and livestock and poultry breeding.

Conceição do Jacuípe is quite different from its neighboring communities in terms of land allocation. While in the neighboring communities of Amelia Rodriges and Coracao de Maria mainly large landowners (Portuguese latifundarios ) cultivate the land, ownership in Berimbau are rather characterized by many small private farms. While the neighboring communities in the last 30 years have recorded no appreciable economic growth, Conceição do Jacuípe has grown considerably. Advantage of the place is good access to the transport infrastructure. Since the early 2000s, therefore, and have been recorded more corporate offices due to fiscal measures, including a shoe factory, a factory for disposable medical devices and a wide distribution station for soft drinks and beer. The place had to late 2004 a female mayor, in the more conservative state of Bahia, a complete novelty.

After two successful elections ( at great expense, federally funded ), in which she had then spent nearly two-thirds of the total municipal budget only for shows and Forro bands to give the people the Classic " Panem et Circensis " program she was voted out eventually. However, the successor turns out beyond contemporary problematic, due to the national " deindustrialization " due to the permanently rigged exchange rate of the Brazilian currency, with the resulting consequences such as mass unemployment, extremely high crime and state Wirtschaftslenkung.Diese macro - economic effects are of a predominantly illiterate population not without understanding further, and are thus interpreted as a direct consequence of the regional elections and understood as such. This led many times to unexpected election results within a very short periods of time in this, as well as in many other municipios in northeastern Brazil.
