Conesus Lake

The Conesus Lake is one of the smaller lakes in the Finger Lakes in the west of the U.S. State of New York.

It is the Conesus Lake to the westernmost of the eleven Finger Lakes. It is located 35 km south of Rochester. The outlet of the lake is located on the northern end of the Hamlet Lakeville in the Town of Livonia in Livingston County. The lake is drained by the Conesus Creek to the Genesee River.

The Conesus Lake was created as a moraine at the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. It has a north- south extent of 13 km and has a width between 1 and 1.5 km on. The lake lies at an altitude of 249 m and is up to 20 m deep. Near the southern end of Lake lies the Town of Conesus.

In August 2006, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed that fish are suffering in the lake of viral haemorrhagic septicemia ( VHS).

In the winter months, the surface of Conesus Lake freezes and provides the opportunity for snowmobiling and ice fishing.

Each year on the evening of July 3 to take part in the residents around the lake, the traditional " Ring of Fire". This is organized by the Conesus Lake Association. There are an estimated 10,000 Bengal fire ignited around the lake and fireworks organized.
