The Aeroporto de Congonhas in São Paulo (IATA: CGH, ICAO: SBSP ) is a Brazilian airport. It is located on Avenida Washington Luís in the south adjacent to the center of the city.

Was opened the airport in 1936, the first flight was carried out in Rio de Janeiro as a target and was from an airplane of VASP.

Reason for the construction was to create an airport for the city of São Paulo, who would be adversely affected by flooding at high water of the Rio Tietê, as the Campo de Marte (Mars Field ) was the case.

Due to its small capacity, the relatively short runways and its central, already completely rebuilding situation of São Paulo - Guarulhos airport located north-east was built in 1985. Since then, start at the Aeroporto Internacional de Congonhas only domestic flights.

In the 1970s, a hall overlooking the airstrip was often used for graduations, weddings and the like.

Due to the large number of passengers a project for the renovation and modernization of the airport by the Infraero was launched. This was to ensure the capacity of 12 million passengers a year to meet in the future. The implementation started in 2003. The first phase, the reconstruction of the arrival and departure area and the installation of passenger boarding bridges for the convenience of getting in and out was completed on 15 August 2004. The second phase, with changes in the gate area, construction of a parking garage for 3,000 vehicles and improve traffic flow in early 2007 was completed. From February to June 2007 also both start and runways were renewed.
