Cook Island, South Sandwich Islands

Cook is the name of an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, located in the sub-Antarctic archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands. With the Bellingshausen Island and the Morrell Island it forms the group of the Southern Thule Islands.

The Morrell Island lies to the west, separated by the Douglas Strait and Bellingshausen to the east, separated by the Maurice Channel.

The island with an area of ​​about 20 sq km is uninhabited, however, provides for numerous seabirds an important nesting area.

1775, the island was discovered by the British navigator James Cook, to which it owes its name.
