Cooper Island

The Cooper Island ( engl. Cooper Iceland ) is an uninhabited island in the South Atlantic and part of the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The rocky island is one of the islands of South Georgia from the southeastern tip of the main island of South Georgia it is separated only by the 1.6 km wide Cooper sound. The highest elevation is 416 meters above sea level.

The island was discovered on January 18, 1775 by James Cook and once Cooper's Isle, in honor of his Lieutenant Robert Cooper, baptized.

The Cooper Island is one of the few rat -free islands of the archipelago and therefore a popular breeding area of pelagic bird species such as the Black- ( Thalassarche melanophris ), the snow petrel ( Pagodroma nivea ) or the Macaroni penguin ( Eudyptes chrysolophus ). The island is also a retreat of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella ).
